SwRI Develops Novel Compression Devices For CO-2 Sequestration

Engineers at Southwest Research Institute have completed testing of a high-pressure turbo pump and an enhanced compressor design for sequestration of carbon dioxide emissions from pulverized coal, integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and oxy-fuel power plants.

Under funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and industry partners, SwRI researchers investigated novel compression concepts that would boost the pressure of CO-2 to pipeline pressure levels with a minimal amount of energy required. Its solution is a liquid CO-2 turbo pump and an internally cooled compressor diaphragm.
