U.S. To Keep Emissions Goal Thanks To Natural Gas
The United States will keep a pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions made in 2009 with help from a domestic boom in natural gas, Washington’s lead negotiator said at the U.N. climate talks.
At 2009’s climate talks in Copenhagen, President Obama pledged the U.S. would cut emissions in a range of 17% below 2005 levels by 2020.
“We must stand behind the underpinnings of what our leaders agreed to in 2009,” said Jon Pershing, head of the U.S. delegation. Developed countries committed to providing $100 billion annually starting in 2020 to help developing countries deal with the worst effects of climate change.
