Composite Repair Users Group Talks Permitting At 2nd Annual Conference
The Composite Repair Users Group met for its 2nd Annual Conference and Exhibition on Sept. 7 in Houston. The one-day conference, which was free to attend, focused on the permitting status of composite repair techniques for pipelines, updating members on new advances, demonstrating methods and results from testing and discussing the state of the industry.
Professional development hours were offered for engineers.
Approximately 60 attendees were reminded that many repair methods can be used on pipelines with a special permit issued by PHMSA or an intrastate permitting authority, and that an operator request for such a permit is usually the fastest way to attain one. Advances in technology not yet available commercially were also on the agenda, with reports in from representatives of research taking place at Chevron, ESR Technology and the University of Tulsa.
Regulators from the Texas Railroad Commission, PHMSA and private consultancies answered attendees’ questions and discussed the overlaps in policy as well as general approaches toward pipeline integrity maintenance techniques not yet covered by universal standards, including composite repairs.
New officers elected include Franz Worth, incoming chair; Steve Siever, vice chair; Julian Bedoya, secretary/treasurer; Bart Davis, public relations; and Amanda Hawkins, marketing coordinator.
