Maine-Based 88-Mile Gas Transmission Line Announced

Sappi Fine Paper North America and Huhtamaki have signed on with Summit Natural Gas of Maine in a two-fold project that will bring natural gas to the Kennebec Valley. Construction will begin shortly on an 88-mile transmission pipeline that will bring gas directly to the two paper mills.

Summit Director of Business Development Mike Duguay said the natural gas will let off one-third of the emissions compared to burning oil. The second part of the $350 million project will add 1,600 miles of pipeline branching out to 17 communities in the Kennebec Valley. The project will require local contractors to get the job done. Duguay says more jobs will follow.

Residential areas in the Kennebec Valley, depending on location, can have natural gas for their homes starting at the end of the year with more neighborhoods receiving service in 2014.
