Court: Do-Over Needed on New Jersey Natural Gas Pipeline Plan
PEMBERTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey appeals court says a hotly contested plan for a natural gas pipeline through the ecologically sensitive Pinelands region needs a do-over.
The panel on Monday returned the matter to the state Pinelands Commission, ruling that its executive director did not have the authority to determine that the plan complied with the commission’s rules for development.
The Sierra Club and other environmental groups challenged the 2015 decision.
The commission will now have to review the application of South Jersey Gas and decide whether it complies with Pinelands management rules.
The pipe would bring gas to the B.L. England power plant in Cape May County that’s switching from coal to natural gas as part of an agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection.
