UK Oil and Gas Authority Releases Data on Over 3,000 Pipelines

LONDON, UK - Earlier this week, the UK Oil and Gas National Data Repository (NDR) was launched with over 130 terabytes of data covering thousands of pipelines, offshore wellbores, and seismic surveys going back more than 50 years. This is believed to be one of the largest ever single open releases of data in the industry.

The repository comes from the UK Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) and is freely available to everyone and the OGA hopes the repository will spur recovery of an estimated 20 billion barrels of oil and gas that still remain on the UK Continental Shelf.

“The NDR creates research opportunities for both technology and analysis,” explained Simon James, OGA Chief Information Officer. “For the industry, it means access to a huge data pool to harness digital technology, relieves them of the regulatory requirement to retain information, and enhances collaboration.”

The Repository marks a commitment to the OGA’s policy of open data as it already maintains a comprehensive open data site with information on exploration, drilling, licensing rounds, and more. — P&GJ
