Construction Begins on Middle Section of China-Russia East-Route
(Reuters) – Construction of the middle section of the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline project, a major energy cooperation project between the two countries, began in Shenyang City of northeast China's Liaoning Province on Thursday.
The key middle section of the project will see 1,110 kilometers of pipeline being constructed connecting Changling County in northeast China's Jilin Province to Yongqing County of Langfang City in north China's Hebei Province.
Construction of the section, which officially got underway in Shenyang's Faku County with the welding of various parts on Thursday, is scheduled to be completed by October 2020.
The new pipeline is expected to effectively alleviate natural gas shortages in northeast China and across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region.
The 3,371-kilometer-long Chinese section of China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline starts in the border city of Heihe and terminates in Shanghai. Construction began in June 2015 and will be completed next year.
The Russian part of the pipeline, which started construction in September 2014, links the Kovyktin and Chayandin gas fields in Siberia with the eastern port city of Vladivostok, covering a total distance of nearly 4,000 kilometers.
Upon completion, the pipeline is expected to provide China with some 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia annually.
