PGNiG Loads First LNG Tankers in Lithuania
(P&GJ) — Polish gas company PGNiG has sold the first two loads of liquefied natural gas from its reloading station in Klaipeda.
The buyer of both cargoes is CRYO Shipping AS, a Norwegian company specializing in supplying fuel to ships powered by liquefied gas engines. The company operates on the bunkering market in the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Lithuania.
The loading of two road tankers took place on Tuesday, April 7.
The LNG purchased from PGNiG was used to fuel the Greenland cement plant mooring in the port of Klaipeda, whose owner is the Norwegian JT Cement AS.
“Despite the difficult market situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we needed only a week to start operating in Klaipeda,” said Jerzy Kwieciński, President of the Management Board of PGNiG.
“We are happy to be able to cooperate with PGNiG. We want to develop our position as a ship bunkering service provider in the Klaipeda port,” emphasized Nicholai H. Olsen, Managing Director of CRYO Shipping.
Due to environmental requirements, LNG is increasingly used as fuel in maritime transport.
The port in Klaipeda is one of the top five largest ports on the Baltic Sea in terms of transhipments.
PGNiG won the tender for the exclusive use of the Klaipeda station in November 2019. The tender was organized by Klaipedos Nafta, which is also the operator of the floating LNG regasification and storage terminal moored in the Lithuanian port, a few kilometers next to the reloading station.
The Klaipėda station is equipped with five tanks with a total capacity of 2,250 tons of LNG. It has two loading stations for road tankers or ISO-containers that can be used simultaneously.
