M6 System Expansion Nears Completion, Set to Enhance Gulf Coast Connectivity

(P&GJ) — Momentum is nearing completion of a substantial expansion of its M6 System, connecting East Texas and North Louisiana to the Gulf Coast and LNG markets. This expansion, a combination of acquisitions from Midcoast Energy and Align Midstream, is complemented by the in-progress NG3 greenfield project.
A critical aspect of the M6 system expansion is the completion of the New Generation Gas Gathering (NG3) project, expected in 2024. This project will add approximately 275 miles of natural gas gathering pipelines and 2.2 Bcf/day of capacity to premium Gulf Coast and LNG markets, playing a pivotal role in serving the Gulf Coast market.
In September 2022, Momentum announced that its board of directors had reached a final investment decision on the gathering and treating project and that the company recently closed on two acquisitions.
“With significant long-term volume commitments from several leading Haynesville Shale producers, including Chesapeake Energy, we are pleased to reach a positive FID on our new gathering and treating project,” Frank Tsuru, CEO of Momentum, said. “Combined with our existing capacity on the Midcoast system, NG3 will [help] address bottlenecks in the Haynesville Shale and provide much-needed capacity to the growing LNG markets on the Gulf Coast.”
Additionally, the NG3 project, with an initial capacity of 1.7 Bcf/d, is expandable to 2.2 Bcf/d and incorporates carbon capture capabilities, removing 100% of CO2 and permanently storing it underground. This innovative addition not only enhances sustainability but also provides producers with a net negative CO2 emission solution, aligning seamlessly with the company's commitment to environmental stewardship.
The M6 System boasts an impressive throughput exceeding 2.2 Bcf/d and covers around 4,000 miles of pipelines, with 3,800 miles dedicated to natural gas and 200 miles to natural gas liquids. The M6 System strengthens its position as a comprehensive and resilient infrastructure, ensuring the delivery of high-quality natural gas to end-users, prioritizing safety and environmental standards.
Seven processing plants, equipped with a total processing capacity of 760 MMcf/d, underscore Momentum's commitment to efficient resource utilization. With over 2.2 Bcf/d in gas treating capacity, the M6 System further solidifies its role as a key player in the midstream sector.
M6 Midstream's acquisitions of Midcoast Energy's East Texas business (Midcoast ETX) and Align Midstream are integral components of its strategy, bringing extensive gathering and transportation systems into Momentum's portfolio, enhancing its presence in the Haynesville Shale region.
