Baker Hughes, Snam Partner to Decarbonize Italian Gas Network with Hydrogen-Ready Technology
(P&GJ) — Baker Hughes has secured a contract with Snam, Europe’s primary operator in natural gas infrastructure, to provide advanced technology aimed at decarbonizing the Italian gas network.
The contract, scheduled for booking in the first quarter of 2024, entails Baker Hughes supplying three NovaLT 12 gas turbine-driven compressor trains for a new gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy. This station is a crucial component of the Adriatic Line, a significant pipeline project initiated by Snam. The Adriatic Line, included in Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) as part of the REpowerEU Plan, is designed to transport additional energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean region to northern Europe via a 425-km (264-mile) long, hydrogen-ready pipeline.
The adoption of Baker Hughes' NovaLT 12 turbines, capable of running on 100% natural gas or hydrogen blends up to 10%, marks a significant step toward decarbonizing the Italian gas network infrastructure. It aligns with Snam’s strategic objective to achieve carbon neutrality on direct emissions by 2040.
The contract, awarded to Baker Hughes following a public tender, builds upon a longstanding collaboration between the two companies. This collaboration has included milestone achievements such as the successful testing of the world’s first “hybrid” hydrogen turbine designed for a gas network in 2020 and the installation of a NovaLT 12 turbine at Snam’s Istrana site in November 2022.
Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, “This milestone in our long-standing collaboration with Snam demonstrates that the energy transition requires continuous partnership. Together, we are innovating and delivering critical world-firsts for the decarbonization of gas networks.”
Baker Hughes has been actively involved in hydrogen projects, with recent milestones including the establishment of a new hydrogen testing facility in Florence, Italy, and the completion of manufacturing and testing of NovaLT 16 hydrogen turbines for projects in Canada and Saudi Arabia.
