TotalEnergies, Vanguard Renewables Partner to Expand U.S. Renewable Natural Gas Production
(P&GJ) — TotalEnergies and Vanguard Renewables, a US leader in farm-based renewable natural gas (RNG) production backed by BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure business, have formed a joint venture to develop, construct, and operate Farm Powered RNG projects in the United States.
The agreement, signed on April 12, aims to advance 10 RNG projects within the next year, with an annual capacity totaling 2.5 billion cubic feet (0.8 terawatt-hours).
These projects, initially located in Wisconsin and Virginia, mark a significant milestone in leveraging food biowaste processing to produce renewable natural gas. TotalEnergies' Vice President of Biogas, Olivier Guerrini, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership's potential to contribute to the energy transition, stating that the joint venture aligns with TotalEnergies' goal of producing 10 terawatt-hours of RNG by 2030.
Vanguard Renewables, headquartered near Boston, Massachusetts, has emerged as a key player in the RNG sector, operating 17 organics-to-RNG facilities with an annual capacity exceeding 1.5 billion cubic feet. The company, acquired by BlackRock in 2022, plans to commission over 100 RNG projects by 2028. Neil H. Smith, Vanguard Renewables' CEO, highlighted the strategic significance of partnering with TotalEnergies to further expand their RNG footprint and advance their mission of waste-to-energy decarbonization.
The joint venture combines Vanguard Renewables' project development expertise with TotalEnergies' industrial experience, aiming to market RNG through long-term purchase agreements with industrial buyers committed to decarbonization. Doug Vaccari, Managing Director at BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure, emphasized the strength of the partnership in scaling and operating renewable gas assets, positioning Vanguard Renewables for accelerated growth and success.
The collaborative effort underscores a transformative approach to waste management and carbon reduction, with the initial projects focusing on food and beverage waste recovery supplemented by dairy manure. Vanguard Renewables' established network of food industry partners and the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance facilitate organic waste recycling and renewable energy utilization, contributing to the circular economy and sustainability goals of major U.S. brands.
As TotalEnergies and Vanguard Renewables embark on this venture, the transaction's completion is subject to customary conditions precedent.
