Wood Completes FEED for Aramco's Carbon Capture Hub in Saudi Arabia
(P&GJ) — Wood, a leading global consultancy and engineering firm, has finalized the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for Aramco's Accelerated Carbon Capture and Sequestration (ACCS) project in Saudi Arabia.
The project, touted as the largest of its kind globally, aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions from upstream operations.
In the initial phase, the ACCS project targets capturing emissions from Aramco gas plant facilities near Jubail, on Saudi Arabia's east coast, as well as from third-party sources. Wood's involvement in designing the greenfield dehydration and compression facilities, along with a vast pipeline network spanning over 200 kilometers, underscores its commitment to advancing carbon capture technology.
The project's ambitious goal is to transport and sequester 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of CO2 emissions by 2027, with plans to scale up to 14 MTPA by 2035. This aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader CCUS objective of reaching 44 MTPA by 2035, contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
Craig Shanaghey, Wood's executive president of projects, emphasized the pivotal role of CCS in achieving the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. He highlighted the significance of investments like the ACCS project in driving tangible progress towards reducing carbon emissions from heavy industries.
The successful completion of the FEED, spearheaded by around 200 engineers from Wood's global Projects and Consulting business units, marks a significant milestone in advancing sustainable energy solutions and supporting Aramco's transition ambitions.
