(P&GJ) — In its Q1 2024 business update, NextDecade Corp. revealed significant progress in the advancement of its Rio Grande LNG facility. The company has set its sights on issuing a full notice to proceed (NTP) to Bechtel for Train 4 and its related infrastructure by the second half of 2024.
“Construction of Phase 1 at the Rio Grande LNG Facility continues to progress according to plan, as we work alongside Bechtel to construct Trains 1 through 3 and their supporting infrastructure safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget,” Matt Schatzman, NextDecade’s chairman and CEO, said.
Phase 1 of the Rio Grande LNG Facility, which encompasses Trains 1-3, is currently under construction, with three liquefaction trains poised to produce a total nameplate capacity of 17.61 MTPA of LNG. This phase also includes essential infrastructure such as LNG storage tanks, jetty berthing structures, and associated site amenities. Progress on Trains 1 through 3 remains on schedule, with notable advancements in civil works, concrete foundation pours, and procurement activities, facilitated in partnership with Bechtel.
Pre-FID activities for Train 4, including the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and EPC contract processes with Bechtel, are underway, with expectations of finalizing the EPC contract by the end of the second quarter of 2024. The company is actively engaging in commercial discussions to solidify arrangements for Train 4 and anticipates securing financing through a combination of debt and equity funding.
“The Rio Grande LNG Facility has truly begun to take shape recently, as concrete foundation pours for Train 1 are ongoing, key materials such as piping and structural steel have been delivered to the site, and shoreline work and levee construction are underway,” Schatzman said. “Proactive project and risk management remain key priorities as construction of Phase 1 continues to progress.”Top of Form
Spanning across 984 acres of leased land with 15,000 feet of frontage on the Brownsville Ship Channel, the facility has garnered all necessary approvals for construction, including from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Department of Energy (DOE), paving the way for the development, construction, and operation of up to five trains and 27 MTPA of LNG exports.
