Golden Pass LNG Receives FERC Approval to Commission Key Systems

(P&GJ) — Golden Pass LNG has secured federal authorization to begin commissioning several critical components of its liquefied natural gas terminal in Texas, marking a significant step forward for the project as it nears production.
In an April 28 letter addressed to Golden Pass Regulatory Analyst Cecil Ogden, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted approval to commission the boil-off gas (BOG) compression system, LNG storage, liquefaction system, LNG pumps, and the end flash gas compression system. The decision follows the company’s December 2023 request and subsequent filings in October 2024 and February 2025.
“This approval is based on FERC staff’s construction inspections and review of the information filed,” the letter stated. The green light is consistent with several conditions outlined in FERC’s 2016 Order granting authorizations under Sections 3 and 7 of the Natural Gas Act.
However, the commission emphasized that the authorization is limited. Golden Pass is not yet permitted to introduce hazardous fluids into other terminal facilities. “Additional authorizations will be released once Golden Pass has demonstrated full compliance with the conditions of the Order,” the letter said.
FERC also reminded Golden Pass that it must continue to comply with remaining terms of the original order, as well as all applicable regulations enforced by the Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Golden Pass LNG, a joint venture between ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy, is developing the project near Sabine Pass, Texas. Once operational, the facility is expected to play a key role in expanding U.S. LNG exports.
