BKV Approves Carbon Capture Project at Texas Gas Plant
(P&GJ) — BKV Corporation has approved a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project at a natural gas processing plant in South Texas, partnering with a major midstream energy company. The facility, located near Freer in the Eagle Ford Shale, aims to cut emissions by permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO2) underground.
Under the agreement, BKV will purchase CO2 emissions from the plant, compress and transport them, and inject them into a nearby well for permanent sequestration. The Texas Railroad Commission has approved the project’s Class II injection well, and an environmental monitoring plan is awaiting approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project, which reached a final investment decision (FID) in December 2024, is expected to begin operations in early 2026, targeting an annual sequestration rate of 90,000 metric tons of CO2.
The facility expands BKV’s CCS portfolio, which includes the Barnett Zero project in North Texas and the upcoming Cotton Cove CCS project, scheduled to start operations in 2026.
“This new CCS project addition to our portfolio further demonstrates our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions from our owned and operated upstream and natural gas midstream businesses,” said BKV CEO Chris Kalnin. “Collaborating with one of the largest energy companies in the United States is critical for advancing our closed-loop, net-zero strategy of deploying profitable CCUS assets.”
