Freeport LNG Gets FERC Approval for Train 4 Extension Through 2031
(P&GJ) — Freeport LNG has secured federal approval for a 40-month extension to complete its Train 4 liquefaction project in Brazoria County, Texas, according to a July 17 letter from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
The extension allows Freeport LNG and its affiliate, FLNG Liquefaction 4, LLC, to continue development of the project through December 1, 2031. The new timeline gives the company additional flexibility to finalize commercial agreements and complete construction.

The Train 4 expansion was initially authorized by FERC in May 2019 with a four-year deadline. After previous extensions in 2020 and 2022, the most recent target was set for August 1, 2028. The company requested additional time following the June 2022 explosion at its terminal, which temporarily took the entire facility offline.
Freeport LNG told regulators that repairs have been completed and the terminal has returned to full service. The company is now focused on marketing Train 4 and securing long-term customer commitments, noting that financing for LNG projects requires clarity on construction timelines.
FERC received no public comments or objections to the extension request.
