H2SITE, SNAM to Develop Hydrogen Separation in Italy’s Gas Pipeline Network
(P&GJ) — H2SITE and SNAM have partnered on a project to separate hydrogen from natural gas mixtures, an initiative backed by the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks, and Environment (ARERA).
The project aims to enhance hydrogen recovery while maintaining the integrity of existing natural gas infrastructure.
At the core of the project is H2SITE’s Pd-alloy membrane separator, designed to extract hydrogen concentrations between 2% and 10% from natural gas. Once operational, the facility will be the largest of its kind, enabling the production of high-purity hydrogen for fuel cells, gas turbines, and industrial applications. The system also minimizes hydrogen content in the remaining natural gas to prevent disruptions in industrial processes and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
The technology, proven in previous gas grid trials, operates at pressures above 50 bar, making it suitable for large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns or depleted reservoirs. This collaboration strengthens H2SITE’s presence in Italy and expands partnerships with transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs), advancing efforts to integrate hydrogen into existing gas networks.
