OPAL Fuels, Republic Services Launch RNG Project at North Carolina Landfill
(P&GJ) — OPAL Fuels has formed a joint venture with an affiliate of Republic Services Inc. to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill in Concord, North Carolina.
The facility will convert biogas generated from landfill waste into RNG, with an initial annual design capacity of about 1.4 million MMBtu. The project repurposes an existing OPAL-owned renewable electricity facility on-site and includes a new long-term gas rights agreement for the plant.
Construction is already underway, and the facility is expected to enter service in line with OPAL’s other RNG project timelines.
“This facility further advances OPAL Fuels’ positioning as a leader in the development, operation, and distribution of RNG that provides a sustainable and cost-effective fuel solution for fleets,” said Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO, OPAL Fuels. “We appreciate increased collaboration with best-in-class partners as we continue to bring cost effective solutions for partners, fleet customers, and the local communities they serve.”
The project will capture biomethane from decomposing organic waste and refine it into RNG for use as a low-carbon transportation fuel.
