STATS Group Develops Cold-Work Connectors for Titanium Pipelines
(P&GJ) — STATS Group has launched a new range of mechanical pipe connectors designed specifically for titanium pipelines, marking a first in the industry with DNV type approval.
Developed in response to growing demand in Norway’s offshore sector, the connectors provide a non-weld solution for high-corrosion environments like the North Sea, where titanium is increasingly used in subsea risers, flowlines, and systems exposed to seawater and corrosive gases.
“Titanium pipelines offer superior corrosion resistance, but when it comes to repairs or modifications, welding is expensive, time-consuming, and risky,” said Joanna Mountford, Business Development Manager at STATS Group. “Until now there hasn’t been a suitable cold-work solution, but STATS Mechanical Connectors have remedied that problem and deliver fast, permanent, and leak-free connections without the need for welding.”
The connectors range from 0.75" to 60" in size, support various pressure ratings, and are available in coupling, end-cap, and standard connector formats. Each unit includes an integrated test port for verifying integrity post-installation. While initially targeting the Norwegian Continental Shelf, STATS anticipates future demand in other regions, including the Gulf of Mexico.
The cold-work connectors are compatible with topside, subsea, terminal, and FPSO applications and can be used with titanium as well as carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, CuNi, and other materials. They require no specialized tools and use a simple bolted installation method that reduces project time and cost.
