Enbridge Seeks Approval For $5.5 Billion Northern Gateway Project

Enbridge Inc. announced that Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines has filed with Canadian regulator, the National Energy Board, commercial agreements which fully subscribe for long term service and capacity on the Northern Gateway Pipeline.

As proposed, the Northern Gateway Project is a $5.5-billion 1,177-km twin pipeline system and marine terminal. The proposed project, currently under regulatory review, would transport 525,000 bpd of oil for export and import 193,000 bpd of condensate.

The two pipelines, 726 miles in length, will run between an inland terminal at Bruderheim, Alberta and a marine terminal near Kitimat, BC. About 310 miles of pipeline will be in Alberta and 416 miles in British Columbia. One line will carry crude oil west to Kitimat and the other line will transport condensate east to Bruderheim. The project also includes construction and operation of an integrated marine infrastructure at tidewater to ccommodate loading and unloading of oil and condensate tankers and marine transportation of oil and condensate. Preliminary design work, engineering and environmental assessments have already been completed for the $2.5 billion project.

Current plans call for the two lines to begin service between 2012 and 2014.
