Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub Wins DOE Phase 1 Award
(P&GJ) — The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) announced it has received Phase 1 award status from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), making it one of the first U.S. Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs to achieve this milestone.
The award includes an initial $27.5 million from a potential $1 billion in federal funding as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Phase 1 will involve planning, permitting, and analysis to ensure the hub’s technological and financial viability, with input from local stakeholders.
“This is a significant step for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association after months of planning and negotiations,” said Chris Green, President of PNWH2. “We are excited to lead the development of a new clean energy commodity that will benefit generations in our region.”
PNWH2 aims to establish the Pacific Northwest as a benchmark for low-carbon, economically viable green hydrogen production. The hub will consist of eight nodes across Washington, Oregon, and Montana, utilizing the region’s renewable energy to serve public transit, agriculture, heavy transport, and the electric power industry.
Washington State University (WSU) will oversee the Community Benefits Plan for the hub, aligning with the Biden-Harris Administration’s Justice40 initiative. PNWH2 aims to create over 10,000 jobs and develop STEM education programs to ensure a skilled workforce for its projects. Project management is led by AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear.
