(P&GJ) — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is approaching the final stages of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline project, NNPC announced on June 22.
Mele Kyari, group CEO of NNPC Ltd., confirmed the project's progress during an inspection of the OB3 pipeline River Niger Crossing at Aboh, Delta State. The OB3 Gas pipeline is designed to connect the Eastern gas pipeline network to the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in the West and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Pipeline in the North.
For over three years, completing the River Niger Crossing has been a significant challenge, but recent adoption of micro-tunnelling/direct pipe installation technology by contractors Messrs HDD Thailand/Enikkom and Tunnelling Services Group (TSG) has achieved 860 meters out of 1,800 meters required. This breakthrough has renewed confidence in the project's timely completion.
Kyari expressed optimism about finishing the project by mid-August, emphasizing its transformative impact on national gas supply. "Once completed, about 2.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas will flow into our network, significantly bolstering our capacity to meet rising demand," he stated.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, echoed Kyari's sentiments, noting the project's pivotal role in advancing Nigeria's energy ambitions. "The progress at the OB3 River Niger Crossing operation signifies renewed hope and confidence in our energy infrastructure," Ekpo remarked.
Likewise, stakeholders such as Olu Verheijen, special adviser to the president on energy, and Ingo Justen, Managing Director of Tunneling Services Group (TSG), expressed optimism about the project's future impact, highlighting the collaborative efforts to overcome technical challenges.
Engr. Seyi Omotowa, managing director of NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), provided insights into the project's timeline, affirming that current advancements with technology ensure the River Niger Crossing operation remains on track for timely completion.
As Nigeria prepares to harness the OB3 Gas Pipeline's potential, stakeholders anticipate its role in not only meeting energy demands but also fostering economic prosperity across various sectors.
