Golden Gas Launches Open Season for 2.4 Bcf Joy Station Gas Storage in Kansas

(P&GJ) — Golden Gas Service Company has launched a non-binding open season for up to 2.4 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of firm natural gas storage capacity at its planned Joy Station Natural Gas Storage Project, a high-deliverability salt cavern facility to be built in Kiowa County, Kansas.

The open season began on June 16 and will run through July 18, 2025. Golden Gas is inviting interested parties to submit non-binding bids for storage capacity, which will inform commercial development of the project. Only participants in this round will be eligible for any future binding open season and for signing precedent agreements.

Joy Station’s initial phase includes 2.4 Bcf of working gas capacity and injection and withdrawal rates of up to 160,000 Mcf per day, pending final engineering and permitting. The facility is expected to scale up to 9.6 Bcf of working gas and 640,000 Mcf per day at full buildout by Phase IV, potentially accounting for more than 25% of Kansas’s natural gas storage deliverability.

Located at the heart of the Midcontinent region, the project will connect to several major intrastate and interstate pipelines, including Southern Star, Cheyenne Plains, KGS, Northern Natural, ANR, and Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line (PEPL). The site has already passed geological review and is on track to secure Class I injection and storage permits from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment this summer. The facility will operate under a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Kansas Corporation Commission.

“This open season represents the next step in bringing a new source of flexibility and reliability to the Kansas and Midcontinent markets,” said Alan Staab, President and CEO of Golden Gas. “Joy Station’s location, performance profile, and interconnectivity are tailored to help customers manage volatility and optimize supply portfolios in both peak and off-peak periods.”

Golden Gas expects to reach a final investment decision after the open season concludes and state permitting is completed. Service is projected to begin in the second quarter of 2029.
