SONATRACH and Huawei Launch Smart Fiber Sensing Solution for Oil, Gas Pipelines
(P&GJ) — SONATRACH, Algeria's state-owned oil company, unveiled a groundbreaking smart oil and gas pipeline inspection solution developed in collaboration with Huawei at MWC Barcelona 2024. This innovative solution integrates advanced fiber optic sensing technology to enhance pipeline security, intelligence, and operational efficiency.
With SONATRACH managing approximately 43 oil and gas pipelines spanning 14,000 km (8,700 miles) of optical cables, traditional manual inspection methods have proven costly and inefficient, lacking real-time monitoring capabilities. In response, the SONATRACH Joint Innovation Center, in partnership with Huawei and other stakeholders, seeks to streamline operations, reduce maintenance costs, and proactively address pipeline issues using cutting-edge technologies.
Huawei's contribution to this initiative includes the development of a sophisticated pipeline fiber sensing solution leveraging distributed fiber optic sensing technology. The solution features the deployment of Huawei OptiXsense EF3000, an optical sensing device enabling 24/7 automatic pipeline inspection and early warning capabilities with high precision.
Utilizing Huawei's optical fiber sensing solution and live-network service management process, the smart pipeline inspection system detects external disturbances around pipelines by capturing vibration data through accompanying optical fibers. This data is transmitted to designated optical sensing devices, allowing for accurate positioning and timely response to potential threats.
Field tests have demonstrated the efficacy of the fiber warning solution in pipeline inspection scenarios, boasting high alarm accuracy with minimal false positives and precise positioning capabilities. Sana Lallali, manager of SONATRACH Joint Innovation Center, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration's outcomes, highlighting the solution's role in addressing challenges associated with manual inspection and risk identification. Looking ahead, SONATRACH aims to further leverage Huawei's expertise to drive intelligent transformations within the oil industry.
