Nicor Gas Launches First Renewable Natural Gas Interconnection in Illinois
(P&GJ) — Nicor Gas has announced its first renewable natural gas (RNG) interconnection with Air Liquide's largest RNG facility globally. The facility, located in Rockford, Illinois, converts biogas from the nearby Winnebago Landfill into energy via the Nicor Gas delivery system.
The project, part of Nicor Gas' Renewable Gas Interconnection Pilot Program approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission in 2021, marks a milestone in Illinois's clean energy transition. The interconnection became operational on June 12, 2024.
"This interconnection is a significant step forward for Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas on the path to a sustainable energy future for Illinois and facilitating economy-wide carbon reductions while fueling resiliency, energy security, and the growth of the clean energy economy," said Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas.
Air Liquide’s facility is expected to produce approximately 1.3 million Metric Million British thermal units (MMBtu) of RNG annually, equivalent to replacing natural gas in about 12,000 homes each year. The state-of-the-art plant captures methane and carbon dioxide from landfill waste, purifies it, and converts it into pipeline-quality gas.
RNG is a low-carbon fuel derived from organic waste, such as household garbage, wastewater, and agricultural byproducts. By capturing and processing biogas, projects like this can reduce emissions and, in some cases, achieve negative carbon intensity over their lifecycle.
Nicor Gas’ infrastructure plays a critical role in delivering RNG to end users while supporting emissions reductions and encouraging renewable energy development. The utility will retire 13,900 MMbtu annually of environmental attributes from this project, contributing to its greenhouse gas reduction goals.
The project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company leaders, community partners, and local and national officials.
