Steel City Becoming Energy Research Center
Pittsburgh is repackaging itself as an energy innovation city, with new research facilities ramping up at the University of Pittsburgh. The new Energy Innovation Center will be a place where private industry, universities and foundations come together to work on research in a space that hosts job training programs sponsored by the center.
“It’s all market-driven. We’re satisfying a need,” Bill Miller, the center’s chief operating officer and vice president, told Triblive.com. Miller is part of a private venture company that saw the need for the center and began converting older space on the university’s campus into an energy hub.
The University of Pittsburgh is building four energy-related programs at the Energy Innovation Center. Once completed in the fall, the programs will occupy more than a quarter of the center’s lab space with Pitt being its largest tenant.
“We’ll have in this facility in the next few months some of the most advanced laboratories and operations and capabilities in different areas of energy technologies anywhere in the country,” said Greg Reed, university director of electrical engineering.
