JDR Secures Umbilical Contract with Petrogas Transportation

(P&GJ) — JDR, the global subsea cable supplier and servicer, has been awarded a contract by Petrogas E&P Netherlands to supply two umbilicals for the A15 and B10 offshore conventional gas fields in the Netherlands. 

The fields, located in quads A and B, in a shallow water depth of 115 feet and are expected to recover 17.25 MMboe, comprised of 103.5 Bcf of natural gas reserves. As Europe strives to meet high gas demand, the production from this project will support in meeting supply targets. 

JDR will engineer, design and manufacture two subsea umbilicals, which range from 6.2 miles (10 km)-8.1 miles (13 km) in length, to provide vital power to two new platforms located at the A/B shallow gas field.  

The umbilicals incorporate hydraulic hoses, chemical injection hoses, electrical cables and fiber-optic cables that enable communication between the platform facilities. JDR will also deliver topside umbilical termination unit pull-in heads, hang-off bodies and umbilical termination assemblies for the project. 

“We’ll manufacture all the cables at our facilities here in the UK and our technical team of experts will be fundamental in ensuring we meet the swift turnaround time,” said Rory Graham, of JDR. 

JDR will manufacture the umbilical, topside terminations, and additional subsea equipment at its Hartlepool facility, with the hydraulic hoses and LV cables being manufactured in JDR’s Littleport facility. When complete, the umbilicals will be attached onto delivery reels in Hartlepool and loaded onto an installation vessel to be taken offshore.  

The full scope of work will be delivered by the beginning of July 2023.

Xodus Unveils New Offshore Bird Portal to Benefit Energy Industry  

Global energy consultancy Xodus developed a new not-for-profit portal that will support the industry in tracking birds, utilizing offshore platforms in the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS). 

The Offshore Bird Portal (OBP) is a digital data repository which will encourage the long-term collation of relevant geographic and seasonal data relating to seabirds and migrants (passerines) on offshore platforms and structures.  

The number of birds that utilise offshore platforms extends beyond gulls, auks and other seabirds found in UK waters. A long-term bird monitoring programme in the Norwegian North Sea recorded 159 different bird species (seabirds and migrants), utilising platforms over a 9-year period. However, information on how birds utilize platforms in U.K. waters and up to date information on their spatial distribution remains limited.  

U.K. operators are now expected to be more proactive in the management of birds on platforms and undertake additional ornithological surveys, particularly in the run up to decommissioning to minimise disturbance to nesting birds. This data will inform effective decision making by operators, offers up-to-date information on the birds in the area and provides a data source that is of interest to the scientific community. 

The database and toolkit will be offered for the advancement of knowledge, scientific understanding, and ecological awareness across the energy industry. It will be managed by ecologists at Xodus, who maintain the portal, handle data submissions and provide a bird identification service to help offshore personnel with challenging species observations.  

FET to Deliver Four Enhanced ROVs To DOF Subsea 

Forum Energy Technologies (FET) has secured a significant order from DOF Subsea to deliver four of its advanced work-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).  

The ROV order comprises of two 200HP XLX-C’s, which have recently been delivered and successfully mobilised in late 2022, as well as two 200HP XLX Evo II’s to be delivered in Q2, 2023. The XLX Evo II’s hydraulic systems have been redesigned in line with this contract and now share a vastly increased quantity of common component parts with the XLX-C’s, providing a customer benefit for spares commonality and subsequent availability. 

All vehicles are being manufactured at FET’s UK facility at Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire. 

Mark Ainsworth, FET’s DOF account manager said: “This latest order from DOF Subsea further strengthens our position as a leading provider of high quality, adaptable ROVs for the global subsea market.  

“The four new ROVs, which now share so many common systems and components with one another, will bring a mix of smaller footprint benefits via the XLX-C as well as larger platform payload and stability advantages via the XLX Evo II, depending on the task at hand.
